How to properly attach polycarbonate sheets to a greenhouse: a practical step-by-step guide

Thanks to their durability, lightness and excellent insulation properties, polycarbonate sheets are an ideal material for garden greenhouses, carports, swimming pool roofing, etc. However, proper assembly will ensure that the greenhouse is solid, functional and will last a long time. This article will show you how.

1. Prepare everything you need

Before you begin, prepare:

  • Polycarbonate sheets (with appropriate thickness and dimensions)

  • Greenhouse structure (metal or wooden)

  • Screws with sealing washers designed for polycarbonate

  • Drill and screwdriver

  • Tape to seal the edges of the boards

  • Polycarbonate knife or saw (for adjusting dimensions)

  • Protective gloves and goggles

2. Correct measurement and preparation of the boards

Polycarbonate needs to be cut exactly according to the dimensions of the structure. Always measure twice and cut once. Remember that with temperature fluctuations, the material may stretch slightly, so leave a small gap (about 3-5 mm) around the edges.

3. Mounting polycarbonate on the greenhouse frame

  • Place the boards on the structure with the groove of the board in an upright position so that the water can drain freely.

  • Fasten the plates with screws with sealing washers to prevent water from entering around the screws. Screw in the screws carefully so as not to crack the material, but tight enough to hold the plates.

  • Keep a distance of about 30-40 cm between the screws for proper attachment.

4. Sealing the edges of the plates

To prevent moisture or dirt from getting inside, use a special tape to seal the edges of the boards. At the same time, this tape will allow the board to breathe and equalize pressure when temperatures change.

5. Inspection and completion of assembly

After attaching all the boards, check that they are firmly attached and do not bend. If necessary, add additional fasteners. Finally, clean the surface of the plates from dust and fingerprints.

Final tips

  • Always mount polycarbonate on a clean and solid structure.

  • Choose high-quality screws and accessories designed specifically for polycarbonate.

  • Observe safety precautions when cutting and assembling.

  • For larger areas, consider using professional tools and assistance.
